Gel coat

A gel coat is a material used to give a high quality finish to the surface of a fiber-reinforced composite. The most common ones are based on unsaturated epoxy or polyester resins.

Gel coats are modified resins applied in liquid state which polymerize forming crosslinked polymers on glass fiber or carbon reinforcements. Such coatings offer both a glossy surface and a high durability feature, providing resistance to UV rays, degradation and hydrolysis.
